Key Terms Explained Simply
Cookie — A small text file a website saves in your browser. Some are essential (like keeping you logged in), while others track activity across websites.
Consent — The visitor’s clear and recorded “yes” or “no” decision about allowing cookies.
Consent Management Platform (CMP) — A tool like ConsentBit that manages consent banners, script blocking, and consent records.
Banner — The popup or bar visitors see requesting permission for cookies and tracking.
Script — A piece of code (such as Google Analytics) that runs on a website and may place cookies in the visitor’s browser.
Script blocking — Preventing a script from running until the visitor gives consent.
Prior consent — Asking for permission before non-essential cookies or scripts are loaded, as required by GDPR.
Opt-in — A consent model where visitors must actively agree before cookies are enabled. Common under GDPR.
Opt-out — A consent model where cookies are enabled by default, but visitors can disable them later. Common under CCPA.
Consent log — A timestamped record of consent choices kept for compliance and audit purposes.
Consent category — A group of cookies, typically divided into Necessary, Preferences, Analytics, and Marketing.
Geo-targeting — Displaying different consent banners or rules based on the visitor’s location or region.
Google Consent Mode v2 — A Google framework that adjusts tag behavior based on user consent choices.
IAB TCF v2.3 — An advertising industry standard for sharing consent signals with ad vendors and advertisers. Mandatory from February 28, 2026.
