Local Storage is a browser-based storage mechanism that allows websites to save data on a user's device with a larger capacity than cookies and no automatic expiration. Unlike cookies, Local Storage data is not sent to the server with each HTTP request. From a GDPR and ePrivacy Directive perspective, storing personal data or tracking identifiers in Local Storage requires the same consent as cookies — the law covers any technology that accesses or stores information on a user's device, regardless of the storage mechanism used. Many cookie scanners now detect Local Storage use alongside traditional cookies.
